We are now well into the new year and many of us had a resolution to be healthier in 2010. It has been cold and most of have been eating cooked food to feel warm. I am into comfort as much as anyone, but I am also an enzyme guy.

Enzymes are found in raw food and they are the corner stone of many of my nutritional treatment programs in my Santa Clara Chiropractic clinic. Enzymes are the things in food that break your food down.

When you eat raw food, it has all of the enzymes needed to break that food down; and the digestion of the food is assisted by the enzymes in the food itself. When you heat food above 120 degrees, you kill the enzymes and the food is now lacking one of the most important nutrients. Your body now has to supply the enzymes to digest the food (all digestion is accomplished by enzymes) and that is a lot of extra work. Over time, by eating cooked food, we deplete the enzyme reserve that our body has when we are young; and then our digestive system.is incompetent. This weakens our immune system as well, which also depends on (and competes for) these enzymes to function and be effective.

What most people don’t know, is that there are hundreds of kinds of enzymes. You waste your money going to Whole Foods to buy enzymes when you don’t know which ones YOUR specific body needs to address your personal deficiencies. There are simple tests that make this evaluation so you can be assured that your supplements are exactly what you need for optimal digestion and assimilation, as well as maintaining a top notch immune system.

One study at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago showed that elderly adults (age 69-100) had only 1/30th the amount of enzymes in their saliva (the first place that your body starts to digest your food is in the mouth) than people aged 21-31. So we lose much of our digestive capacity as we age. If you want to be healthier, support your digestive system. We can help you find out what your body digests well and what it doesn’t, then we will help you work out a diet that your body can more easily assimilate, with correct enzyme supplements most suited to your individual needs. And eat more raw foods. In 2010, health starts in the gut!

In one of my recent blog articles, I told you of my back pain that came on after over working my legs on my first day of skiing in Tahoe this year. On returning to work on Monday and Tuesday, I had extreme pain after bending at the waist to avoid squatting with my extremely sore legs. After developing soreness in my low back, I had my therapy staff work on me in my clinic in Santa Clara. Since my pain was in my low back, you would think that massage, deep tissue work, vibration therapy, etc. over this area would be the answer, right?

Well, this is how it works with medicine and drugs. If you have pain in your wrist, you get a shot in your wrist for the pain, etc. But in this instance, when my staff worked on my back, I got very little relief. We did an evaluation of my movement (ie. the back can only move with proper motion of the feet, legs, hips, etc. It all works together.) This is referred to as the kinetic chain. We applied this kinetic chain principle and worked on the muscles of my legs and hips and wow did I get some back pain relief. As soon as we started working on the legs, there was almost instant relief in my low back.

Anatomy dissects the body up into pieces, but physiology evaluates how the parts move and work together (function). Body function and movement are the focus of chiropractic treatment. All of my training and specialized post graduate studies are oriented around the function of the nervous system, the locomotive system, the digestive system, etc. Rather than focusing on your symptoms, and temporarily masking them with drugs, I find the cause of the problem creating the pain, discomfort or dysfunction. Once we locate the correct cause or source of the problem, together you and I then fix it.
